What You Should Consider
Before Hanging Metal Wall Art
Before Hanging Metal Wall Art
Metal
wall art sculptures are currently very popular for home
decoratings but hanging metal wall art because of the size and the
weight of some of the pieces
requires some special hardware
to ensure
proper mounting and stability.
You can find beautiful and intricate metal wall art sculptures depicting grass, leaves, birds, horses and other realistic items, as well as interesting abstract designs.
Other than the aesthetic value, which is a matter of personal taste, there are several things that you should consider before you buy metal wall hangings. Weight being the main consideration.
However,
one of the beauties of hanging metal wall art is that it looks just as
enchanting and decorative on an outside brick or concrete wall as on an
inside wall and also holds up very well in most outdoor conditions.
Metal wall art sculptures are
typically heavier than other
decorative items. Although
some artists
use lighter metals, such as aluminum or aluminum alloys, even those
metal wall
hangings are still heavier than drapery, for example.
If your home has drywall, which most do, you will need to find a stud. The studs are the 2x4s that the drywall is attached to. In order to locate a stud, you can purchase a stud-finder in a home improvement store which shouldn't run you more than $20 or you can try banging on the wall.
There is a slight difference in sound
when you tap on an
area that has a stud behind it. Dry
wall
between the studs sounds hollower.
Move
across the wall in 1 1/2 inch increments, in order to avoid missing one.
The location of the studs in your
home may be a
consideration when you are planning on hanging metal wall art, as they
will
determine where the piece can be hung.
Typically, the studs are placed a couple of feet
apart.
If the studs are not in the location
that you wish to hang
the metal wall art sculpture, you can purchase dry wall anchors. Lighter weight metal wall
art sculptures will
hang just fine on the anchors. Heavier
ones will eventually pull the anchor through the dry wall, leaving a
large
hole.
For heavy metal wall hangings to be
hung in the location of
a stud, you can use an eight penny nail, available at any hardware
store. You’ll find
dry wall anchors and self-tapping
screws there, as well.
If you decide to use dry wall anchors
to hang your metal
wall art sculptures, you will need a screwdriver of an appropriate type
and
style. The anchor,
which consists of a
screw with a butterfly style back, is initially tapped into the wall at
the
desired location. When
the screw is
tightened, the butterfly opens up, to hold the screw in
place.
For metal wall hangings with two or
more hangers, you should
measure and mark the correct location with a pencil.
To get it straight, measure from the ceiling
down or the floor up and mark the spot with and X.
When it comes to selecting and hanging metal wall art, purchasing the right hardware that is rated for twice the weight of the metal artpiece is half the battle and if hung correctly, you will enjoy your metal wall art sculpture for many years. All it takes is having the right tools and the right hangers.
